Description

The MAGfire DR916-240 is a 240V AC electromagnetic door holder designed to hold fire doors open during normal use and release them automatically when a fire alarm is activated. The system comprises a wall-mounted electromagnet in a white plastic housing and a steel keeper plate that fixes to the door itself, creating a holding force when the magnet is energised on mains power.

Used in commercial, educational and healthcare buildings where fire doors are required by regulation but need to remain open for daily access, the MAGfire integrates with standard fire alarm control panels. When the alarm triggers, power to the magnet is cut, the magnetic field collapses instantly, and the door closer (fitted separately) swings the door shut to contain smoke and fire spread. The 240V AC operation means the unit draws power directly from the building's mains supply without requiring a separate transformer.

The white surface-mount housing measures 100mm per side and projects approximately 40mm from the wall when fitted. The electromagnet inside generates sufficient holding force to retain a standard fire door against typical door closer tension, though exact force depends on the gap between magnet and keeper plate — optimal performance requires the keeper to sit flush against the magnet face when the door is held open. Installation requires connection to a fire alarm output relay that cuts power on alarm activation, plus standard wall fixings for the magnet housing and door fixings for the keeper plate.

Frequently Asked

Does this replace a door closer?

No. The MAGfire holds a fire door open but does not close it. A separate automatic door closer is required to swing the door shut once the magnet releases on alarm activation. The door holder and door closer work together as part of a compliant fire door system.

What fire alarm connection is needed?

The MAGfire requires connection to a fire alarm control panel output that cuts power to the magnet when the alarm activates. This is typically a normally-closed relay contact that opens on alarm, breaking the 240V AC supply to the electromagnet. Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician familiar with fire alarm systems.

Can it be used on any fire door?

The MAGfire is suitable for timber and composite fire doors fitted with an automatic door closer. It is not suitable for sliding doors, doors without a closer, or doors where Building Regulations require the door to remain closed at all times. Check local fire safety regulations and consult a fire safety officer before installing.

What holding force does it provide?

Holding force depends on the air gap between the electromagnet and the steel keeper plate. Optimal holding is achieved when the keeper sits flush against the magnet face with minimal gap. The force is sufficient for typical fire door applications when correctly installed, but performance degrades if the door sags or the keeper plate is misaligned.
