Description

The Lohanda is a counter stool 105cm tall, with a frame of acacia and a seat and back panel woven in munja grass. The legs are square in section and taper towards the floor. The seat is wrapped in tight rows of fibre laid side by side, while the back panel is woven in blocks set at right angles to one another, so the fibres catch the light in alternating directions. The back is set at a slight rake.

The seat is 68cm from the floor, which is counter height rather than bar height, so it suits a worktop or island of around 90cm. The seat is 46cm across and 44cm deep, and the stool takes up 47 x 52cm of floor. A rail crosses the front between the legs at shin height for a foot to rest on, and the top of the back stands 37cm above the seat.

The frame is acacia and the weave is munja grass. Munja is a wild grass that grows on riverbanks across India, fast enough that it needs no cultivation, and it has long been used for rope and basket weaving. Every panel is woven by hand around the frame, so the tension and the run of the fibres differ from stool to stool, and the colour will shift a little over time. The stool weighs 8.1kg.
