Description

A round coffee table in mango wood, 95cm across and 46cm high. The top is made up of boards picked for their grain and left raw rather than stained, so the knots and the changes of tone between one board and the next stay in plain view. It stands on a single turned pedestal, a swelling column that draws in at the neck and again at the foot, set on a wide round stepped base.

At 95cm across it takes the middle of a seating group rather than one end of it, standing in front of a three-seat sofa with room to walk all the way round. Because it stands on a pedestal there is nothing at the corners, so a chair can be drawn in from any side and feet go anywhere underneath. The top sits a little below the line of a sofa seat, and at 35.8kg this is not a table that shifts once it is placed.

The top is mango wood, a by-product of the fruit growing, and the base is turned slowly by hand on a lathe, which is where the curve of the profile comes from. Because the boards are chosen one at a time for tone and grain, the face of every table is different, and a raw finish means the wood goes on moving in colour rather than holding the shade it arrives at. The same round form is made as a side table.
