Laya Carved Wood Side Table - Chocolate Brown

A round side table, 55cm across and 50cm high, in mango and neem wood finished in a deep chocolate brown. The top is a thick disc with a slightly uneven edge. It stands on a turned pedestal: a ring collar under the top, a full bellied baluster below that, a second set of rings, and a stepped round base that spreads wide enough to hold the table steady. The grain runs strongly through the pedestal, and the fine checks that have opened along it come with solid timber.

At 55cm across the top is wide for a side table and will carry a tray as well as a lamp and a cup. Beside a chair it holds books and a mug, with the pedestal base standing clear of the chair legs. Because the weight sits on one central foot rather than four corner legs, the table can be pushed right up against the arm of a sofa or an armchair. It stands 50cm high.

The table is solid mango and neem wood, shaped and finished by hand in the Indian woodworking tradition. The chocolate brown is worked so the grain and the knots show through rather than being covered over. The Laya range also holds two dining tables in the same finish.

How do I look after it?

Wipe the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth to remove dust and moisture, always working in the direction of the grain. Mild soap and water can be used for cleaning, but take care not to use excess water. Keep wet items off the top, use coasters and mats, and clean up spills immediately. Keep it out of strong direct sunlight, which fades the wood, and away from extremes of heat and humidity, which can cause cracking and splitting.
