Description

The Laali is a coffee table in mango wood, 140cm long, 70cm deep and 45cm high. The top is a plank surface with the seams between the boards left showing and the grain running the length of it. Two drawers sit side by side in the long apron, each with a small rectangular wooden pull. Four square legs stand at the corners with their edges taken off, and the wood is left pale, the darker grain reading grey brown through it.

At 45cm it sits at about the seat height of a sofa, so a cup on it is at hand rather than down at floor level. At 140 by 70cm the top takes a tray, a stack of books and a lamp at once, and the two drawers underneath take what would otherwise be left on it.

The table is mango wood throughout and is carved by hand, so the surface texture and the run of the grain differ from one table to the next. The wood is a by-product of the mango fruit industry, put to a second use rather than grown for timber. The table weighs 28.5kg.
