Description
Kyo Rect. is a rectangular wall mirror, 89cm wide by 129cm high and 2cm deep, in a wooden frame with a charred black surface. The finish is a nod to Shou Sugi Ban, the Japanese method of preserving timber by charring it with a flame, and it leaves the grain raised and visible rather than painted over. The result is a black that still reads as wood, with texture and depth in it at close range.
At this size it works over a console, in a hallway, or as a single piece on a bedroom wall. It hangs in two directions, so it can be fitted upright or on its side. It is not rated for bathroom use, so keep it in dry rooms. Kyo is made in other dimensions as well, and we can have it made to a custom size if this one does not suit the space. Because the charring raises the grain, the frame is matt rather than glossy and takes fingerprints far less readily than a lacquered black. Two hanging directions are available. It can be made to a custom size from a single piece, so the proportions can be matched to the wall. Because the charring raises the grain the frame is matt rather than glossy, and it takes fingerprints far less readily than a lacquered black.
The mirror weighs 13.2KG, which is a comfortable two person lift, and the shallow 2cm depth helps in a corridor or on a landing where a deeper frame would be in the way. Two hooks with wall plugs are supplied and there is nothing to assemble. Dust the charred surface dry with a soft brush and avoid wet cloths on it, since the charring is a surface treatment rather than a sealed paint; clean the glass separately with cleaner on the cloth. Seven year warranty, made in Belgium.

Frequently Asked
Why is the wood black?
The surface is charred rather than painted, in the manner of the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban method, which was used to preserve timber. The grain stays visible.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
No. This mirror is not rated for bathroom use, so keep it in a dry room.
Can I have it in a different size?
Yes. Kyo is made in other dimensions and it can be made to a custom size.
How do I clean the frame?
Dust it dry with a soft brush. Avoid wet cloths, as the charring is a surface treatment rather than a sealed paint.
What size is it and what does it weigh?
89cm wide by 129cm high and 2cm deep, weighing 13.2KG.
