Description

The Komal is a serving platter cast in recycled glass, 28cm long from the end of the handle and 15cm across, with a shaped handle running off one short end. The face is a rounded rectangle held inside a low raised edge, and the glass runs about 2cm thick through the body. It is transparent but not colourless: the recycled stock leaves a green cast where the section is thickest, and the face carries the ripple of the mould it was cast in.

It is made for putting food out on rather than for cutting on, and it is not suitable for use as a chopping board. At 28 by 15cm it takes a cheese and a few crackers, a handful of cured meats or a short row of canapes, and the handle gives somewhere to hold it when it goes round a table. A larger size is made in the same range. It is food safe.

The glass is recycled. Waste glass is collected and washed to remove impurities, then crushed and melted down before it goes into a mould, so the thickness and the run of bubbles vary from platter to platter. The Komal serving platter is made in a larger size as well, 40cm long.
