Description

The Knightsbridge FR150 is a 150mm-diameter round fire hood built from breathable intumescent material, designed to restore fire integrity around recessed downlight cutouts in fire-rated ceilings. When exposed to heat during a fire, the intumescent material expands to seal the ceiling void and prevent flame spread for up to 60 minutes.

The hood fits above recessed downlights in plasterboard, concrete and suspended ceiling installations where the ceiling itself carries a fire rating that would otherwise be compromised by the downlight aperture. The breathable fabric construction allows heat from the lamp and driver to dissipate under normal operation, preventing the terminal block and downlight housing from overheating while maintaining fire protection when needed. Installation requires a minimum 170mm void depth above the ceiling surface to accommodate the 150mm height of the hood.

The lightweight, flexible construction allows the hood to be fitted around existing downlights during renovation work or new installations. The fabric can be compressed slightly during fitting and will spring back into position once released. The FR150 is rated for 60-minute fire protection but does not carry an acoustic rating, so it will not reduce sound transmission between floors.

Frequently Asked

What void depth is required above the ceiling?

A minimum 170mm void depth is needed to accommodate the 150mm height of the fire hood. This allows the hood to sit above the downlight housing without being compressed, which would reduce its fire-protection effectiveness.

Does this provide acoustic insulation?

No. The FR150 is fire-rated only and does not carry an acoustic rating. It will not reduce sound transmission between floors or rooms.

How does the intumescent material work?

Under normal conditions the material is breathable and allows heat from the downlight to dissipate. When exposed to fire temperatures (typically above 150°C), the intumescent material expands rapidly to seal the ceiling aperture and prevent flame spread for up to 60 minutes.

Can it be used in concrete ceilings?

Yes. The FR150 is suitable for plasterboard, concrete and suspended ceiling installations. In concrete ceilings the hood sits within the drilled or cored aperture above the downlight housing.
