Description

A cake slice in stainless steel with a brushed gold finish, 25.5cm from the end of the handle to the tip of the blade. The blade is a broad pointed leaf, stepped at the shoulder and set below the line of the handle so it can run flat under a slice. The handle tapers away from that step and then widens again into a rounded spade at the end. Its whole length is beaten, so it sits faceted and irregular in the hand against the smooth face of the blade.

The blade is 5.5cm at its widest, which carries a standard wedge of cake in one piece, and the 4cm of crank between handle and blade keeps knuckles clear of whatever is still on the plate. The same shape goes under a tart, a quiche or a tray bake. At 0.12kg there is enough in it to push through a firm sponge without the blade flexing, and it is short enough to lie on a cake stand beside the cake rather than across the table.

Blade and handle are both stainless steel, finished in brushed gold rather than plated bright, so the surface holds a soft even sheen instead of a mirror. The beating on the handle is done by hand, so the pattern of the marks differs from piece to piece and no two catch the light the same way. Matching salad servers are made in the same finish.
