Description

A set of four round coasters, each 11cm across and a centimetre thick, coiled from banana leaf fibre. The fibre is spun into a cord and wound from the centre outward in a flat spiral, each turn stitched to the one before it, so the face reads as a set of rings and the outer edge follows the last turn rather than being cut true. The colour is the straw tone of the fibre, lighter and darker by turns as the cord runs round.

At 11cm across, a coaster takes a tumbler, a mug or the foot of a wine glass with room round it. On a pale wood table the fibre sits close in tone to the wood beneath. At a centimetre thick they lift a glass clear of the surface. Four is enough for one end of a table rather than for a full setting.

The coasters are banana fibre and jute. Banana leaves are taken from the fruit-growing fields, where they were once treated as waste, and the fibre is drawn out of them and spun. Keso is also made as placemats, and both the coasters and the placemats come in a brown as well as this natural.
