Description

The Kerteh Candle Lantern is a tall, square aluminium lantern with a clear glass cylinder at its foot to hold a candle. It stands 57cm high and measures 15.5cm long and 15.5cm wide. That is a small footprint for a mantelpiece or a deep windowsill, with enough height to hold its own beside a mirror or a picture. Each of the four sides opens in a tall arch, and the top rises to a pitched roof crowned with an acorn-shaped finial. A round ring handle sits at the very top. The finish is dark, almost black, and distressed so that warm bronze-coloured flecks show through across the faces and edges.

This is a lantern for indoor rooms, and it is happiest where people gather in the evening. We like it on a hearth, at the end of a dining table, or as a pair either side of a hallway console. The arched openings leave the glass and the flame in clear view from every side, so it looks just as good from across the room as it does at arm's length. It suits a rustic or traditional home, yet the clean square lines sit comfortably in a plainer modern scheme too.
