Description

The Kaziria is a tub armchair 88cm tall and 72cm wide, built on a mango wood frame left pale and dry rather than stained. A single sweep of woven cane runs from one arm round the back to the other, so the sides and the back read as one curved panel instead of three. The four legs are turned, fluted and tapered, the front arm ends are scrolled, and a small padded pad sits on the top of each wooden arm. The seat is upholstered in a natural linen and a plump loose cushion sits on top of it.

The seat is 50cm off the floor, 63cm across and 58cm deep, which makes it a low, deep chair to sit back in rather than an upright one, and the cane curves round far enough to take a shoulder on either side. At 72cm wide it takes a corner of a bedroom, a wide landing or the space beside a fireplace, and at 13.15kg it moves without help. The cane is an open weave, so light carries straight through the back of the chair and it does not shut off a window the way a solid back would.

The frame and the arms are mango wood and the back and sides are cane. The seat and the arm pads are covered in a light natural linen with a tactile, slubby quality to the weave. The cane is woven by hand, so the tension and the run of the weave differ from one chair to the next, and the pale finish sits unevenly across the grain of the wood.
