Description

The Karuma is a ceramic jug, 15.5cm tall and 7.5cm across, made as a plain straight-sided cylinder with a single triangular lip pulled out of the rim. It has no handle. The upper half is painted in fine vertical blue lines that run down from the rim and break off in ragged tips around the middle of the body, leaving the lower half the plain cream of the clay. Every line is drawn by hand, so the length and the weight of them vary all the way round.

At 15.5cm tall it holds 500ml, which is about three glasses of water, so it serves a table rather than a crowd. The straight sides and the open rim mean it stands as a vase just as readily, and the painted band sits high on the body, above the level of a low arrangement of stems. With no handle it is held around the body, and at 7.5cm across that is a one-handed grip empty and a two-handed one full.

The clay is white and the piece is glazed inside and out. Each jug is shaped and painted by hand, so the lines and the pull of the lip differ from one to the next. The Karuma range runs to a larger jug, side and dinner plates, a cereal bowl, a serving bowl, mugs, and a twelve piece dinnerware set.
