Description

The Kallu is an armchair upholstered in a wool and cotton weave over a solid mango wood frame, with one narrow blue grey stripe running from the top of the back, down it, across the seat and over the front edge. The stripe sits off centre and is the only break in the fabric, which is otherwise a flecked natural weave. The back is square with its top corners rounded off, the arms are low and rolled, and a line of small dark tacks follows the curved bottom edge of the upholstery above the legs. The four legs are turned mango wood, the front pair cut with a collar and a baluster profile and the back pair left plainer.

The seat sits 42cm from the floor and runs 65cm deep, which is low and deep for a chair of this size, so it is made to sit back in rather than to sit up at. The back rises another 54cm above the seat, and the arms stop well below that, low enough to rest a forearm on but not to lean a shoulder against. Front to back the chair takes 86.5cm of floor, the depth of a full armchair rather than a bedroom one, which suits it to a living room, a reading corner or the end of a bedroom with room to spare around it.

The upholstery is wool and cotton, applied by hand, over a frame and legs of solid mango wood that are carved and turned by hand. Mango is grown first for its fruit and harvested over a number of years, and only once the trees stop bearing are they cut for timber, which lets the grower replant and draws a second income from the same tree. The same wool and cotton weave, stripe and all, is made up as cushion covers in two sizes in the Kallu range.
