Description

The Kakira is a six light fitting built along a line rather than around a centre. A straight brass bar fixes to the ceiling and two slim rods drop from it on short chain links to a horizontal spine below. Six arms leave that spine, three to each side, and each one cranks down to a ribbed clear glass shade that widens to an open rim. The arms are set at two depths and two heights, so the shades sit staggered rather than in a single row. The brass is antiqued, darker in the turnings, and the fitting measures 94cm across.

A fitting 94cm long and 63cm deep is made for something long underneath it: a dining table or an island, read down its length rather than across. The shades are clear and open at the rim, so the bulb shows and the light falls straight onto the surface below while the ribs throw a broken pattern outward. The drop adjusts at the rods between 86cm and 120cm, which is what lets it sit low over a table or clear of a taller ceiling. It takes six E27 bulbs up to 40W each and it is dimmable. At 7kg the fixing wants to be into a joist.

The frame is solid brass with an aged finish and each of the six shades is blown by hand, so the ribbing and the wall thickness differ from shade to shade. It is rated IP20, for dry indoor rooms. Bulbs are not included.

Frequently Asked

How long a table does it suit?

At 94cm across it works over a table of about 1.4m or longer, so there is a margin of table showing at each end rather than the fitting running out past it.

How low should it hang?

The drop adjusts between 86cm and 120cm at the rods. Over a table, measure from the table top rather than the floor, and set the lowest glass around 75cm to 90cm above the surface so it lights the table without blocking the person opposite.

Why are the shades at different heights?

The arms alternate front and back off the spine and sit at two levels, which is what gives the fitting its 63cm depth and stops six shades reading as a single flat row.

Will the six shades match?

Closely, but each is blown by hand, so the ribbing and the thickness of the glass vary a little between them.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off at the wall and let the glass cool, then a soft dry cloth on each shade. Keep abrasives and harsh chemicals off the aged brass.
