Description

The Kaadu is a tapered drum covered in kilim, a flat woven textile with no pile, made in wool over a jute warp. The pattern is a stepped blockwork of deep rust and undyed cream, the two colours meeting in square edged terraces rather than curves, and the warp shows through as a fine grid across both. The weave is thick enough to read as a textile rather than a surface. This is the medium: 18.5cm tall and 30.5cm across.

Each shade is cut from a length of woven kilim, so where the cut falls decides what pattern lands on it. The same blockwork falls differently on every shade, which is what the range is: the motif, the scale and the balance of rust against cream shift from one shade to the next, and none of them repeats. Thirty centimetres is the width most ordinary table lamps are built around, so this size fits a lamp already in the room and gives it a pattern it did not have. It fits a table lamp, a floor lamp or a ceiling pendant. It weighs 0.57kg.

Kilim is woven by interlacing warp and weft on a flat loom, which is what gives it the stepped edges: a diagonal has to be built from squares. The Kaadu is wool over jute. No bulb, base or fitting is included.

Frequently Asked

Will every shade carry the same pattern?

No, and none of them do. Each shade is cut from a length of woven kilim, so the motif that lands on yours depends on where the cut fell. Expect the same colours and the same kind of pattern, not the same arrangement.

Why are the pattern edges stepped rather than curved?

Because kilim is flat woven. A diagonal has to be built out of squares, which is what gives the motifs their terraced edges.

Is it jute or wool?

Both. The coloured weave is wool and it runs over a jute warp, which is the fine grid you can see through the pattern.

How do I care for it?

Handle it by the fitting rather than the kilim, and lift dust off with a soft brush. Keep water and harsh chemicals away from the wool.
