Description

JCB D LR20 ultra alkaline batteries deliver 1.5V per cell in a 2-pack blister, designed for high-drain devices that cycle through standard zinc batteries quickly. Each D cell measures 61.5mm tall by 34.2mm diameter and uses an alkaline manganese dioxide chemistry that maintains voltage output under continuous draw better than zinc-carbon equivalents.

These batteries suit torches, portable radios, motorised toys, camping lanterns and other devices where a D cell sits in the holder for weeks or months at a time, delivering steady current when switched on. The alkaline chemistry provides up to 10 times the capacity of standard zinc cells in high-drain applications, meaning fewer mid-use battery swaps and longer intervals between replacements. The cells are also lighter than rechargeable D NiMH batteries, which matters when the device sits in a rucksack or toolkit.

JCB packages the two cells in a sealed blister to protect the terminals from shorts during storage and transport. The blister dimensions of 88mm wide by 120mm tall fit standard retail hooks and drawer organisers. Each cell carries an anti-leak construction that reduces the risk of electrolyte seepage inside the device if the battery is left installed after depletion, though best practice remains removing batteries from devices during long-term storage.

Frequently Asked

What devices are D batteries typically used in?

D cells power large torches, portable radios, camping lanterns, motorised toys, and battery-powered tools. The larger cell size provides more capacity than AA or AAA batteries, making them suitable for devices that need sustained current over hours or days of intermittent use.

How long do alkaline D batteries last compared to zinc?

JCB ultra alkaline D cells provide up to 10 times the capacity of standard zinc-carbon D batteries in high-drain applications. Actual runtime depends on the device's current draw — a torch drawing 500mA will deplete the cells faster than a radio drawing 50mA.

Can these batteries be recharged?

No. Alkaline batteries are single-use and should not be placed in a charger. Attempting to recharge alkaline cells risks leakage, rupture or fire. If rechargeable D cells are needed, look for NiMH rechargeable D batteries instead.

What's the shelf life of JCB alkaline batteries?

Alkaline batteries typically retain 80-90% of their charge after 5 years of storage in cool, dry conditions. Store the blister pack indoors away from heat sources and direct sunlight to maximise shelf life.
