Description

A GU10 spotlight bulb that draws 3W and gives 230 lumens at 6500K, the crisp blue white end of the daylight scale. The retail pack rates it as a replacement for a 35W halogen spot, which is what most existing GU10 downlights and track heads were originally fitted with. The form is the familiar pressed cone with a flat frosted face in white, and the base carries the two short GU10 pins: push the bulb up into the holder and turn it a quarter turn to lock.

Daylight is a working light rather than a settling one, so this suits kitchens, utility rooms, garages, workshops and home offices, or any spot over a worktop or bench where you want to see clearly what your hands are doing. The pack prints the output as 230 lumens in a 120 degree cone, so the beam is broad rather than tight and washes a surface instead of picking out a single object. If you are refilling a ceiling row, keep every lamp on the circuit at the same colour temperature, because one 6500K bulb among warm white neighbours reads as a cold gap.

This lamp is not dimmable. On a dimmer circuit it may flicker, buzz or fail to light at all, so check the switch before you order. The energy label puts it in class F at 3kWh per 1000 hours, and the pack states a life of up to 10 years and 91% less energy used than the halogen it replaces. Its IP20 rating is the ordinary indoor rating and offers no protection against water. Each unit is a single bulb, with a minimum order of 12 sold in multiples of 12. Will this fit my existing GU10 spotlights?

Yes, if the old lamp has two stubby pins about 10mm apart and twists into the holder rather than pushing in. That is the GU10 fitting, and this bulb uses the same cap.

Does it need a transformer or driver?

No. GU10 lamps run directly from the 220 to 240V mains supply, so there is nothing extra to fit. The 12V MR16 lamp is the one that needs a transformer behind it.

Can I put it on a dimmer switch?

No, this one is not dimmable. On a dimmer it may flicker, hum or refuse to light, so use a plain on and off switch, or choose a dimmable lamp for that circuit.

What does 6500K daylight look like once it is in?

Clean and blue white, close to midday light. It reads as bright and alert rather than cosy, which is why it works over worktops, benches and desks.

Is 230 lumens enough to replace my old halogen?

The pack rates it against a 35W halogen spot, so in a multi lamp ceiling row or a track head it gives a comparable level of light for 3W.
