E27 (ES) LED Golf Bulb 4.9W 470lm Non-Dimmable - Warm White 3000K

A golf ball lamp is the small round bulb that goes where a full size GLS would look oversized: table lamps, wall lights, small pendants and multi arm fittings. This one measures 45mm across and 80mm long, as printed on the box, and it carries the E27 screw cap. E27 is the larger of the two common screw threads at 27mm across, so check the old bulb before you order: the narrower one is E14. The LED draws 4.9W and puts out 470 lumens, which the pack gives as a 40W replacement, and the opal cover over the diodes spreads the light rather than leaving a bright point.

Warm white at 3000K sits at the yellower end of white light, near what an old filament bulb gave, and it suits living rooms, bedrooms and landings where comfort matters more than clarity. If you are filling a whole room, keep every bulb at the same 3000K: mixing it with 4000K cool white shows up at once on painted walls. The beam spreads over 180 degrees, so light travels sideways as well as forwards and fills a fabric shade or a glass globe evenly instead of throwing a cone. Colour rendering is printed above 80, so wood, fabric and skin tones read honestly.

There is no dimming here: the pack marks it not dimmable, so on a dimmer circuit expect buzz, flicker or nothing at all, and a plain switch is the right home. The rating is IP20, for dry indoor positions only. The energy label puts it in class F at 6kWh per 1000 hours, and the pack prints a 10,000 hour life, up to 10 years. Each box holds one bulb; the minimum order is 12, in multiples of 12, which suits relamping a house in one go. Will this fit a lamp that took a 40W golf ball bulb?

Yes, provided the old bulb had the larger E27 screw cap. The glass is the same 45mm golf size, so it will sit inside a small shade without touching, and the pack rates it as a 40W replacement.

Can I use it on a dimmer switch?

No. The pack marks it as not dimmable, so on a dimmer circuit you may get buzzing, flicker or no light at all. Fit it to a plain on and off switch instead.

How does warm white 3000K compare with cool white?

3000K is the softer, slightly yellow light people associate with older filament bulbs. Cool white at 4000K and daylight at 6500K look progressively whiter and bluer, which reads as brighter but less restful.

Does it reach full brightness straight away?

The pack marks it as instant start, so there is none of the slow warm up some older energy saving lamps needed. Switch on and you have all 470 lumens immediately.

Can I use it outdoors, in a porch lantern or a shed?

It is rated IP20, which offers no protection against water, so keep it to dry indoor positions. An outdoor lantern needs a lamp and fitting rated for damp conditions.

Will it look right in an open shade where the bulb is visible?

The opal cover hides the individual diodes and the 180 degree spread lights the shade evenly, so it reads as a soft glow rather than a hard point of light.
