E14 (SES) LED Candle Bulb 4.9W 470lm - Daylight 6500K

This is a candle-shaped LED bulb on an E14 small screw cap, drawing 4.9W and giving 470 lumens at 6500K. The retail pack rates it as a 40W replacement, so it swaps directly for the small incandescent candles that used to sit in chandeliers and wall brackets. 6500K is daylight: a crisp, blue-white light with none of the yellow cast of a warm white lamp, and the pack prints a colour rendering index of 80. The 180 degree beam spreads light around the lamp rather than throwing it forward, which suits open shades and clear glass.

E14 is the smaller of the two screw caps, about 14mm across the thread, so check the old bulb before you order: the larger E27 will not thread in. The candle shape earns its keep where the bulb is on show, in five-arm chandeliers, wall lights with upturned shades, hallway lanterns and small pendants. Daylight at 6500K reads as cool and awake rather than restful, so it does its best work over a kitchen worktop, in a utility room, on a desk or anywhere close work is being done. Will this fit my chandelier?

It will if the holders take an E14 small screw cap, the narrower of the two screw sizes. Unscrew an old bulb and look for E14 or SES stamped on the metal cap before ordering.

Can I put it on a dimmer switch?

No. The specification states non-dimmable, so it should go on a plain on/off switch. On a dimmer circuit a non-dimmable lamp can flicker, buzz or fail early.

What does 6500K daylight actually look like in a room?

It is a cool, blue-white light rather than a yellow one, closer to bright overcast daylight. Good for kitchens, utility rooms and desks, less restful for a bedside lamp.

Is 470 lumens enough on its own?

It is roughly what an old 40W candle gave, so one bulb suits a small wall light. In a five-arm chandelier five of them together will light an average dining room comfortably.

Will it fit inside a small clip-on shade?

The pack gives the bulb as 36mm across the widest point and 99mm long including the cap, so measure the shade opening and depth against those figures first.

Does it run on normal UK mains?

Yes. It is made for a 220 to 240V supply, so it drops straight into any standard domestic light fitting with an E14 holder.
