Description

The Japos is a shallow rectangular planter tray in aluminium, 36cm long, 23.5cm wide and 10cm deep. The sides slope outward from a flat base to a rolled rim and the corners are rounded rather than square. A looped handle rises from each short end in a darker bronze tone against the grey of the body. The lower half carries a fine ribbing, and the aged zinc finish breaks into a pale crusting that climbs unevenly up from the base.

At 36cm long and only 10cm deep this takes a row of small pots or a shallow bed of compost rather than one deep-rooted plant. It stands on a table and takes low herbs. It is made for outdoor use as well, so it stands on a garden table, a step or a wide sill, and the handle at each end means a planted tray can be lifted from one spot to another. It doubles as a tray for carrying drinks outside.

The tray is aluminium. Each one starts as a flat sheet of metal cut to shape, then heated and worked by hand, and the parts are welded together before the zinc finish goes on. That finish keeps changing in the open air, so further oxidisation takes place over time and the pale crusting spreads. At 0.765kg empty it can be carried in one hand.
