Description

The Knightsbridge OP3 is a 2-gang 20AX single-pole 2-way outdoor switch housed in a black polycarbonate IP66-rated enclosure with a built-in blue LED activity indicator. The switch features two semi-circular rocker switches mounted behind a sealed front panel, with multiple 20mm cable entry points positioned around the housing to allow cable runs from above, below or either side.

Designed for outdoor lighting control, garage lighting, garden security lighting and covered outdoor areas where weatherproof switching is required, the IP66 rating protects against high-pressure water jets and dust ingress. The IK06 impact rating handles knocks from garden equipment, foot traffic and accidental contact without cracking the housing. The 20AX rating allows each gang to switch loads up to 4,600W at 230V, making it suitable for multiple outdoor floodlights or high-wattage garden lighting circuits on a single switch.

The polycarbonate construction resists UV degradation better than standard ABS plastics, maintaining the black finish and structural integrity through years of outdoor exposure. The blue LED indicator lights when the switch is active, making the switch visible at night and confirming circuit status from a distance. The Class II construction means the switch does not rely on an earth connection for safety, though an earth terminal is provided for circuit continuity. Multiple cable entries accept standard 20mm conduit glands or grommets, and unused entries are sealed with blanking plugs supplied with the switch.

Frequently Asked

What does IP66 mean for outdoor use?

IP66 provides complete protection against dust and protection against high-pressure water jets from any direction. The switch can be mounted on an external wall exposed to rain, but should not be submerged or installed where standing water can collect around the base. The IK06 impact rating means it withstands 1 joule impacts, equivalent to a 500g mass dropped from 200mm.

What load can each gang switch?

Each gang is rated 20AX at 230V, allowing it to switch resistive loads up to 4,600W or inductive loads (motors, transformers) up to approximately 1,000W. For outdoor LED floodlights this typically means 10-15 high-wattage fittings per gang, depending on individual fitting wattage.

How is the switch wired for 2-way operation?

As a single-pole 2-way switch, each gang requires a live supply, a switched live output, and a common terminal. For 2-way operation between two switches, a second OP3 or compatible 2-way switch is connected via strappers (two additional cables running between the common terminals). See the manual in the Downloads section for the wiring diagram.

Can unused cable entries be sealed?

Yes. The switch includes blanking plugs for unused 20mm cable entry points. These must be fitted to maintain the IP66 rating. If using conduit, fit appropriate 20mm IP66-rated glands to each entry point in use.
