Description

The Knightsbridge IP66 outdoor socket is a 13A 1-gang double-pole switched socket with a neon indicator built into a weatherproof black polycarbonate enclosure. The neon glows red when the socket is switched on, visible through the transparent hinged lid even when closed, providing a visual confirmation of live power without needing to open the cover.

Designed for outdoor installation on garage walls, garden shed exteriors, patios and driveways, the IP66 rating protects the socket from water jets and dust ingress. The hinged lid stays open at 90 degrees when propped, allowing temporary or continuous use without holding it, and the wide cable channels inside the casing accommodate thick over-moulded strain reliefs commonly found on outdoor extension leads and power tools. Multiple 20mm conduit entry points around the base allow flexible cable routing depending on wall position.

The enclosure measures 153mm high, 110mm wide and projects 84mm from the wall when surface-mounted. The polycarbonate construction is rated IK06 for impact resistance, suitable for locations where the socket may be knocked or struck by garden equipment. The double-pole switching isolates both live and neutral lines when off, providing additional safety over single-pole switching for outdoor circuits. The socket is certified to BS 1363-2 and carries a 2-year warranty.

Frequently Asked

What does IP66 mean for outdoor use?

IP66 means the socket is protected against powerful water jets from any direction and is completely dust-tight. It can be installed on external walls exposed to heavy rain and garden hose spray, but is not suitable for full submersion or permanent exposure to standing water.

Can the lid be left open during use?

Yes. The hinged lid holds itself open at 90 degrees when propped, allowing a plug to remain inserted and the socket to be used continuously without needing to hold the lid or remove the plug each time it closes.

What cable entry options are available?

The enclosure provides multiple 20mm conduit entry points around the base, allowing the supply cable to enter from below, from either side, or from the rear depending on the installation position and routing requirements.

Does the neon indicator work when the lid is closed?

Yes. The neon is visible through the transparent smoked lid, so you can see whether the socket is switched on without opening the cover. This is particularly useful in wet conditions when you want to confirm power status before exposing the internal socket.
