Description

The Inayah is a clear glass dome hung from a brass chain. The glass is heavily hammered, dimpled all over so the surface breaks the light into small bright points rather than passing it straight through, and the shape is a plain industrial bell: a short straight collar at the top opening into a deep rounded dome with a wide flat rim. The lampholder is brass and hangs inside on a black flex looped alongside the chain. It measures 35.5cm tall and 35cm across.

Hammered glass is the difference between this and a plain one. Clear glass leaves the bulb starkly visible; the dimpling scatters what passes through it, so the bulb stays on show but its edges soften and the whole dome glitters rather than glaring. That makes it easier to hang low over a worktop or a table than a smooth clear pendant, which is where the wide flat rim also helps by throwing light straight down. It takes one E27 bulb up to 25W and it is dimmable. The flex runs 1.5m and at 3.8kg the fixing wants to be into a joist.

The glass is recycled: waste glass is collected, washed, crushed and melted, then blown by hand into a mould, so the hammering and the wall thickness differ from one dome to the next. The chain and fittings are brass. Bulbs are not included.

Is the bulb visible?

Yes, but softened. The hammered glass scatters the light, so the bulb shows without the hard glare of a smooth clear pendant.

Can it hang low over a worktop?

Yes, and that is where it works best. The flat rim throws light straight down and the dimpling takes the edge off looking at the bulb from the side.

Why only 25W?

The glass is clear, so the bulb is seen directly. Twenty-five watts is bright enough under a dome this size and comfortable to sit beneath.

Will every one look the same?

No. The glass is blown by hand into a mould, so the hammering and the thickness vary between domes.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and let the glass cool, then a soft dry cloth. The dimpling holds dust, so a soft brush helps before the cloth.
