Description

The Igbo is a six sided lantern 27cm tall, widest across the top and tapering down to a short faceted foot. Each face is a panel of ribbed glass set into a metal edge, and one of the six is hinged as a door with a wire catch at its side. The glass is silvered rather than plain, blotched and clouded where the silvering has broken up, and the ribs run vertically down every panel. The frame is a warm brass with rust breaking through at the corners.

At 27cm tall and 15cm across it stands on a surface rather than on the floor: a sideboard, a hall table or the end of a shelf. With a candle lit inside, the flame reads as a broken band of amber behind the ribs rather than as a single point. The door swings open on one face to reach the candle. Indoor use only.

The panels are mercury glass and the frame is iron in a brass finish. Each panel is cut by hand and silvered before the frame is built around it, so the pattern of clouding is different on all six faces and different again from one lantern to the next. The whole thing weighs 1.2kg.

Frequently Asked

How big is the lantern?

27cm tall, 15cm wide and 17.5cm front to back.

How many sides does it have?

Six, and one of them is a door.

Is the glass plain?

No. It is mercury glass, silvered and ribbed, so it clouds and blotches rather than showing straight through.

Can it go outside?

Indoor use only.

How should it be looked after?

Take dust and dirt off with a soft dry cloth, and use a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. For wax, use warm water and a mild dish soap, dry it at once and do not leave it to soak.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes. Set the candle firmly, keep the flame off the glass, keep the lantern away from children, let it cool fully before moving it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
