Description

A hurricane lantern in two parts: a straight-sided glass cylinder that sits into a turned mango wood base. Together they stand 28.5cm tall on a 15.5cm footprint. The glass neither flares nor tapers; the sides run parallel from the base to the rim.

Fifteen and a half centimetres across gives a pillar candle room to stand with glass all round it, and 28.5cm of height keeps the flame well below the rim. At 1.187kg most of the weight is in the wood, so it holds a sideboard or a hearth rather than needing to be steadied.

The base is mango wood and the glass is recycled: waste glass collected, washed, crushed and melted down before it is blown or moulded again. The tone of the wood varies through a single piece. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

28.5cm tall and 15.5cm across.

Does the glass come away from the base?

It sits into the base rather than being fixed to it.

What candle does it take?

A pillar candle.

Is the glass recycled?

Yes.

How do I look after it?

A soft dry cloth for dust, and a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. Warm water with a mild dish soap clears wax; dry it straight away and do not soak it. An edible oil rubbed into the wood protects it and will darken the tone. Indoor use only. It gets hot in use, so stand the candle securely, keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
