Description

The Horatio is an oval bulkhead light with a solid brass body in a black finish. Its clear ribbed glass sits behind a black cage that crosses the front in a grid, and the ribs fan out at the rounded ends of the glass. That cage is the detail that gives a bulkhead its working, seagoing character. It measures 25cm long, 16cm wide and 16.5cm high, and it weighs 1.7KG. It is rated IP64: dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it lives outdoors in British weather all year round.

As a bulkhead, it belongs on an outside wall: beside a front door, in a porch, along a garden wall, on a garage or outbuilding, or on a boathouse. The maker describes the Horatio as taking its influence from traditional maritime lighting, and says that influence shows in the range's materials, designs and names. The caged oval is the shape most people picture on a ship or a quayside, and in black it reads crisp and graphic against white render, pale stone or painted timber. It suits a coastal cottage as well as a plain modern house that wants one hardworking light at the door.

The maker says brass has long been chosen at sea for its resistance to salt air and seawater, and that individual parts of the Horatio can be replaced if needed. The cable comes in through a gland at the end or the rear, and a brass blank is included to close whichever opening you leave unused, so the supply can arrive from one end or straight through the wall. It takes one E27 (Edison screw) lamp of up to 18W, and the lamp is not included. As with any mains light, it should be installed by a qualified electrician. Buy the lamp alongside the light, so it is ready to switch on the moment the work is finished.
