Description

The Hirbessa is a rectangular outdoor wall lantern with a black steel frame holding clear glass panels on the front and both sides. It measures 17cm wide and 29.5cm tall, and stands 11.5cm out from the wall, so it sits neatly beside a front door without crowding a narrow porch. Inside, a single E27 bulb holder takes a screw-cap bulb of up to 60W, and the clear glass puts the bulb on show. A motion sensor is set into the base, so the light comes on whenever someone approaches. It is rated IP44, which means it is protected from splashing water and can live outdoors on a house wall.

We would put it beside a front or back door, along a side passage, by a garage or at the top of garden steps: anywhere you want light only when someone is there. Because the sensor does the switching, nobody has to hunt for a switch with their arms full of shopping, and the light is not left burning all night when nobody needs it. The plain rectangular shape and black finish sit comfortably against brick, render or painted timber cladding, and look as at home on a modern house as on an older cottage. Fitted in pairs either side of a door, two lanterns frame an entrance nicely.

The body is steel, the panels are clear glass, and the sensor sits at the front of the base, facing outwards. This light runs from the 220-240V mains as a hard-wired fitting, so a qualified electrician should install it, and the installation instructions are available as a download. Packed, it weighs 2.05KG. The bulb is not included, so pick an E27 bulb of up to 60W; because the glass is clear, the bulb is part of the look, and a decorative filament bulb with a warm tone suits this lantern well.
