Description
The Hirana is a soft dome of linen and cotton drawn loosely over a cane frame. The fabric is left crumpled rather than pressed, the panels are joined with the seam allowance on the outside so each seam runs as a frayed pale ridge from top to bottom, and the whole shade widens from a small opening at the top to a broad rim at the foot. It measures 47cm tall and 50cm across.
Lit, the shade does something a tight fabric one cannot: the cane ribs of the frame show through the loose weave as fine dark lines, and the frayed seams stand out pale against the glow, so the structure becomes part of what is lit rather than something hidden underneath. That makes it a shade to hang where it will be seen lit and at close range, over a bed or a table rather than high in a stairwell. It is an easy fit shade, so it goes onto a pendant that is already there, or onto a pendant fitting bought separately, with no electrician needed. It is for ceiling use only. It weighs 0.29kg.
The cover is a linen and cotton mix and the frame is natural cane. Each shade is shaped over its frame by hand, so the crumple of the fabric and the run of the frayed seams are different on every one. The Hirana range also holds a large size, 55cm tall and 60cm across. No flex, fitting or bulb is included.

Frequently Asked
Are the frayed seams a fault?
No. The seam allowance is left on the outside and allowed to fray, so it reads as a pale ridge down each panel. Every shade frays a little differently.
Do I need an electrician?
No. It is an easy fit shade, so it goes onto a pendant already hanging, or onto a pendant fitting bought separately.
Why can you see lines through it when it is lit?
Those are the cane ribs of the frame showing through the loose weave. It is what the shade looks like lit, and it is the main difference between this and a tight fabric drum.
Can it go on a table lamp?
No. It is made for ceiling use only.
How do I care for it?
Handle it by the fitting rather than the fabric, and wipe it gently with a microfibre cloth or a duster.
