Five evenly spaced apertures run the length of this slim white plate, so a set of pendants can be brought down in a straight row rather than bunched together in the middle of a room. At 1.1m long it leaves each drop plenty of air between itself and its neighbour, and the plain white face is quiet enough to read as part of the ceiling rather than as another object competing for attention. The plate is non-electric and holds no lamp of its own; all the light comes from the pendants you choose to hang from it.

We reach for a linear plate like this over a dining table, a kitchen island or a long breakfast bar, where a row of smaller pendants suits the shape of the room far better than one fitting in the centre. It also works well down a wide hallway or above a run of counter. It suits anyone putting an arrangement together piece by piece, choosing their own shades and cord, and we would keep the drops level over a dining table and let them step up and down a little over an island for a looser look.

Slim at 10cm across, the plate keeps a low profile so the eye goes to the pendants instead. The white finish asks very little: a soft dry cloth over the face now and then, a barely damp one for any mark, then dry it off and leave solvents well alone. It is meant for dry rooms indoors and carries a one year warranty. The same range runs to compression cord grips and metal cable grip kits in finishes from polished chrome and satin nickel through to antique brass and gilt bronze, so the small visible parts can either match the white or deliberately contrast with it.
