A cabinet, 100cm tall, in black. At 100cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. It wants a wall it can sit flat against and door clearance in front. A cabinet in a walkway is a cabinet with a door that is never fully opened.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Oak is the timber English furniture was made from for four centuries, and the reason is durability rather than looks: it is dense, hard across the grain, and resists the dents that mark a softer wood in a year. A veneer is a thin layer of real timber laid over a stable core, so the surface is genuine wood and the panel beneath it does not move with the seasons the way a solid board does. The strength is in the section, not the bulk: steel holds its shape at a thickness that would flex in almost anything else. Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with. Look at how the doors are held shut. A magnetic catch is silent and forgiving; a latch is positive but announces itself every time.
