Description
Grid Black is a wall mirror 158cm high by 100cm wide, printed with a grid that runs even across the upper two thirds and then breaks into horizontal bars along the bottom. The lines are printed onto the glass rather than leaded or applied, so the surface stays flat and the grid reads as drawing rather than as joinery. The design is by Sylvain Willenz.
The reference is a window, and on a blank wall that is what it does: a tall grid with light behind it. It suits a hallway, a living room or a bathroom, where it is rated to go. It hangs in four directions, and because the bars are gathered at one end rather than centred, each rotation moves the weight of the pattern to a different edge. At 21kg it is a two person lift onto fixings that reach something solid, and at 2.5cm deep it sits close to the wall. Two screws, washers and plugs are supplied with nothing to assemble.
The mirror is printed and mirrored glass, frameless, with the printing on the same sheet as the silvering. Clean it with cleaner sprayed onto a soft cloth rather than onto the glass, working along the lines rather than across them. Where the grid opens into bars the reflection is at its least broken, so hanging that end towards eye level gives you a usable mirror as well as a graphic. The lines are fine enough to read as drawn from across a room and to disappear at arm's length. Seven year warranty, made in Belgium.

Frequently Asked
Is the grid printed or leaded?
Printed onto the glass. The surface stays flat and there is nothing raised to catch a cloth.
Why do the lines change at one end?
The even grid breaks into horizontal bars along one edge, which is where the reflection is least broken.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
Yes. It is rated bathroom proof, so steam and humidity are not a problem.
Which way up does it hang?
Any of four, and each one moves the bars to a different edge.
How heavy is it?
21kg, so it is a two person lift onto fixings that reach something solid.
