The Gosmelle is a square LED downlight that recesses into the ceiling, leaving a slim white trim with softly rounded corners around a flat, evenly lit diffuser. The body is white steel and the diffuser is white plastic, and the panel measures 16.6cm long and 16.6cm wide. The LEDs are integrated, so there is no bulb to change; it draws 11W and gives 1,350 lumens of warm white light at 3000K. It carries an IP20 rating, which settles where it belongs: indoors, in a dry room.

Because it sits neatly within the ceiling rather than hanging from it, this downlight suits rooms where you want clear headroom and a tidy ceiling: a hallway, a landing, a bedroom or a living room. It works well in an alcove or above a window seat, where a pair of them gives plenty of light for a book. Square trims line up cleanly in a row, so several together give a ceiling an ordered, architectural look. At 3000K the light is warm rather than stark, which we find keeps a room feeling comfortable through the evening.

It calls for a recess depth of just 2.6cm and a cut-out of 15.5cm, so it needs only a shallow space above the ceiling.
