A pendant light, 49cm wide, in antique silver. At 163cm tall it comes to about the height of a door handle plus a metre.

Polished cool metals show every fingerprint, which is the trade for the brightness. A brushed version of the same finish hides them almost entirely and still catches the light along the grain. Iron is the traditional choice for a reason: it takes heat, weight and time without complaint. It will mark if it is left wet, so indoors or under cover is where it belongs. It arrives complete with its shade, which is not always true at this price.

It takes 10 E14 screw-fit bulbs up to 6-9W LED. E14 is the commonest fitting on any supermarket shelf, so replacements are never a hunt. It is dimmable, so the level is set at the wall rather than fixed at the bulb. The cable is black. It hangs from 80cm, so it clears a table without cutting the sightline. A Candle shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

The light you actually see is the light that comes THROUGH the shade, not the light from the bulb. That is why the same bulb reads warm behind a cream fabric and cold behind a white one. Dust is the whole of the maintenance and it matters more than it sounds: an even film of dust on a shade dims a room by more than most people would guess, and a soft brush restores it in a minute.
