Description

The Gilmarne is a slim steel floor lamp in black, standing 148.5cm tall on a round weighted base 23cm in diameter. A single pole rises from the base and curves over at the top into a short arm, and from that arm hangs an exposed bulb holder, so the bulb is on show with no shade around it. It takes an E27 bulb, the standard large screw fitting, which means you choose the bulb and the colour of its light yourself; the bulb is not included. It is rated IP20, and that settles where it belongs: indoors, in a dry room.

Because the whole lamp is little more than a line of black steel, it fits into a living room corner, beside an armchair or sofa, next to a bed or in a study, where a bulky shade would crowd the space. The round base needs only a small patch of floor, and the arm carries the bulb out beyond the pole, so the light sits close to where you are sitting. With the bulb fully visible, a decorative filament bulb suits it well; a warm white bulb gives a soft glow for evenings, while a brighter one makes it a practical reading lamp.
