Description

The Knightsbridge FR1200 is a rectangular fire hood measuring 1200mm x 600mm x 300mm, constructed from intumescent material to provide 60 minutes of fire protection for modular recessed luminaires fitted into ceiling voids. The hood fits around Knightsbridge MRA436xxxx series modular recessed fittings and contains fire spread by sealing the luminaire aperture when the intumescent lining expands under heat.

Fire hoods are required by Building Regulations Part B when recessed luminaires penetrate a fire-rated ceiling or floor structure, creating a path for flames and smoke to travel into the void above. The FR1200 sits above the luminaire housing in the ceiling cavity, bridging the gap between the luminaire frame and the ceiling plasterboard. Internal metal rods span the hood's length and bulldog-style clips attach the hood to the luminaire housing, holding it in place without additional fixing to the joists or ceiling structure. A minimum void depth of 320mm above the finished ceiling surface is required for safe installation.

The intumescent material used in construction swells and chars when exposed to temperatures above approximately 150°C, forming an insulating barrier that slows the passage of heat and flame. This allows the ceiling structure to maintain its fire resistance rating for the certified 60-minute period even where the luminaire creates a penetration. The hood is not acoustically rated and does not provide sound insulation between floors. The white external finish blends with standard ceiling installations and the 5-year warranty covers material defects under normal installation conditions.

When a luminaire is recessed into a fire-rated ceiling it creates a penetration that compromises the ceiling's ability to contain fire. The fire hood seals this penetration using intumescent material that expands under heat, restoring the fire barrier and meeting Building Regulations Part B requirements.

What luminaires is the FR1200 compatible with?

The FR1200 is sized specifically for Knightsbridge MRA436xxxx series modular recessed luminaires. The 1200 x 600mm footprint matches the standard modular grid dimension used in commercial ceiling installations. Check your luminaire model number before ordering to confirm compatibility.

What ceiling void depth is needed?

A minimum void depth of 320mm is required above the finished ceiling surface. The hood itself is 300mm tall, so the additional 20mm clearance allows for the luminaire housing and provides space for the internal mounting clips to function correctly.

Does the hood provide acoustic insulation?

No. The FR1200 is fire-rated only and does not carry an acoustic rating. It will not reduce sound transmission between floors. If both fire and acoustic performance are required, a combined fire and acoustic hood would be needed instead.
