Description
Finestra Flutes XL is a full length wall mirror, 175cm high by 80cm wide and 2cm deep, that combines two glass surfaces in one black metal frame. Part of the pane is textured glass with smooth vertical grooves that has been silvered, so it reflects while breaking the light into vertical bands; the rest is plain mirror and reflects cleanly. The two run side by side, which is what gives the piece its window like reading. The design is by Esther Everaert and came out of silvering trials on textured glass.
It suits a hallway, a bedroom or a living room wall, and it hangs in four directions, so the grooves can run vertically or horizontally depending on how the wall reads. The fluted section diffuses whatever light falls on it, so it is worth placing where there is daylight or a lamp to work with. It is not rated for bathroom use, so keep it to dry rooms. The frame is 2cm deep, so despite the height it sits close to the wall, and the four hanging directions mean the fluted band can be placed left, right, top or bottom. The two surfaces split the reflection into a fractured image and a clear one at the same time, and the contrast between them is the point of the piece. It is also made with a Deco glass in place of the vertical grooves, and in a smaller version with a different pattern.
The frame is a slim black metal profile and the mirror weighs 21KG, a two person lift onto solid fixings. Two screws with washers and wall plugs are supplied and nothing needs assembling. Clean the plain mirror with cleaner sprayed onto a soft cloth; on the fluted section work along the grooves rather than across them, since a cloth drawn across the ridges will leave lint in them. Seven year warranty, made in Belgium.
