Fia Mango Wood & Iron Desk - Natural

A desk 120cm wide, 60cm deep and 75cm high, with a thick mango wood top on an iron frame. The legs are flat iron, folded into a squared C at each end with a foot that turns back in along the floor. Two drawers run under the top, their fronts flush with the apron and carrying no handle at all: they are pulled from underneath, so the front of the desk reads as one unbroken band of wood. The wood is pale with the grain open, and the iron is dark with brown showing through where the patina has moved.

At 120 by 60cm it is a narrow desk rather than a deep one, which is what lets it stand along a wall in a living room or a bedroom instead of needing a room given over to work. It stands 75cm to the top. The drawers take what would otherwise have to live on the surface, and because they open from below the front carries nothing at all. A chair pulls under it, and the top takes a lamp and a few books.

The top is mango wood and the frame is iron, cut from sheet and welded to shape. Mango is grown first for its fruit and harvested over a number of years; the trees are cut only once they stop bearing, so the timber comes out of the fruit farming rather than instead of it, and selling it gives the farmers a second income. The top carries a water-based sealant. It weighs 59.5kg. The Fia range also holds two dining tables and two benches.

There are none on the front. Both drawers are pulled from underneath, which keeps the front of the desk one unbroken band of wood.
