Fia Large Mango Wood Bench - Natural

The Fia Large is a dining bench with a single plank of mango wood for the seat, 220cm long and 38cm deep. It stands on two iron legs, each one a flat bar folded into a four-sided frame that leans outward as it drops to the floor, so the feet sit wider apart than the points where the legs meet the seat. The plank is left thick and square at the edges with the grain running its full length, and the iron reads almost black against the pale wood.

The seat sits 45cm off the floor, the same height as most dining chairs, so a bench down one side of a table and chairs down the other line up without a step between them. A 220cm seat wants a table of about the same length to tuck under neatly. At 38cm deep it pushes right back under a table when it is not in use, and set against a wall in a hall it leaves the floor beneath it open for boots and bags.

The seat is mango wood and the legs are iron. Mango is grown first for its fruit and cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing, which lets farmers replant and gives them a second income from the same orchard.
