This is a standard GLS bulb, the familiar rounded pear shape most UK households think of as an ordinary light bulb, built with LED components rather than a filament. It draws 8.8W and gives 806 lumens, which the pack rates as the equal of a conventional 60W bulb. The cap is E27, the larger of the two screw fittings, so check the old bulb for a threaded base rather than two push and twist pins. Light spreads across a 220 degree beam angle, so it carries backwards past the cap as well as forwards, and at 6,500K the colour is daylight: a crisp, blue leaning white rather than the yellow of a traditional bulb.

Daylight suits places where you want to see clearly rather than settle down. Kitchens, utility rooms, garages, workshops and home offices all benefit from it, and it keeps colours honest, which helps when matching paint or reading small print. In a pendant with a shade, a table lamp or an open batten fitting it sits comfortably, and in an exposed position the opal finish keeps glare softer than a clear bulb would. If you are mixing it with warm white bulbs in the same room, expect a visible difference between the two, so it is usually better to fit daylight throughout a space or not at all.

This bulb is not dimmable, so put it on a standard on and off switch rather than a dimmer plate; running a non dimmable LED on a dimmer causes flicker and shortens its life. It is rated IP20, which means dry indoor positions only. The energy label shows class F at 9kWh per 1,000 hours, and the pack prints a 10 year lamp life. Will this fit my existing lamp holder?

It takes an E27 holder, the larger screw fitting also called ES. Unscrew the old bulb and look for a threaded metal base of about 27mm rather than a bayonet cap with two side pins.

How bright is 8.8W against the old 60W bulb it replaces?

It puts out 806 lumens, and the pack rates that as the equal of a conventional 60W bulb, so a single one is enough for most ceiling pendants in an average room.

What does 6,500K daylight actually look like?

It is a clean, slightly blue white, much closer to overcast midday light than to the warm yellow of an old filament bulb. It reads as bright and alert rather than cosy.

Can I use it with a dimmer switch?

No. The specification states it is non dimmable, so it needs a plain on and off switch. On a dimmer circuit it can buzz, flicker or fail well before its rated life.

What does the 220 degree beam angle mean in practice?

The light is thrown very wide, including back past the cap, so it fills a shade evenly and lights a whole room rather than pooling in one direction like a spotlight.

How many bulbs do I receive, and how many boxes must I buy?
