E27 (ES) LED GLS Bulb 8.8W 806lm Non-Dimmable - Daylight 6500K

This is a general service LED bulb with an E27 screw cap, the size most people call ES or Edison screw. It draws 8.8W and gives 806 lumens, and the retail pack rates that as the equal of a 60W conventional bulb, so it is a straight replacement for the standard household bulb most of us grew up with. The light is 6,500K daylight: a crisp, clean white with a cool cast rather than the yellow of an old filament. Colour rendering is printed on the pack as above 80.

The GLS shape is the familiar rounded pear outline, so it sits properly inside a standard shade and looks right in a pendant, a table lamp or a standard lamp where part of the bulb shows. Daylight is the coolest of the three usual colour temperatures, and it suits places where you want to see clearly rather than settle down: a kitchen, a utility room, a garage or workshop, a home office, or a reading lamp beside a chair. In a bedroom or a snug most people prefer warm white, so match the room to the number before you order a boxful.

This one is not dimmable. Put a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer circuit and you can get flicker, buzz or an early failure, so pair it with an ordinary switch or choose a dimmable lamp instead. The pack prints a 10 year, 10,000 hour life and more than 10,000 on and off cycles, which matters more than the hours in a hall or on a landing where the switch gets used constantly. The energy label puts it in class F, and it runs on 220 to 240V mains. It is rated IP20, so indoor fittings only. Each box holds one bulb and the minimum order is five. How do I know my light takes an E27 cap?

Take the old bulb out and look at the base. E27, also sold as ES or Edison screw, is the larger threaded cap measuring 27mm across. The smaller screw cap is E14.

Is 8.8W really as bright as my old 60W bulb?

Brightness comes from the lumen figure, not the watts. This gives 806 lumens, and the pack rates that as equal to a 60W conventional bulb, which is the usual output for a main room light.

What does 6,500K daylight actually look like?

It is the coolest of the common whites, clean and slightly blue rather than yellow. It keeps colours and detail crisp, so it works best where you are working, cooking or reading.

Can I put it on a dimmer switch?

No. It is non-dimmable, so it needs an ordinary on and off switch. On a dimmer circuit you risk flicker, an audible buzz, or the bulb failing well before its rated life.

Will it cope with being switched on and off a lot?

The pack quotes more than 10,000 on and off cycles alongside the 10 year, 10,000 hour life, so it suits a hall, a landing or a cupboard light that gets constant use.

Can I use it in an outdoor fitting?

It is rated IP20, which gives no protection against water, so keep it to indoor fittings and dry locations rather than anything exposed to weather or damp.
