B22 (BC) LED GLS Bulb 8.8W 806lm Non-Dimmable - Daylight 6500K

This is a general service GLS bulb with a B22 bayonet cap, the push and twist fitting that most British pendants, ceiling roses and table lamps use. It draws 8.8W and gives 806 lumens, which the retail pack rates as the equal of a 60W conventional bulb, so it drops straight into the place an old 60W pearl bulb used to hold. The light is 6,500K, the coolest of the white tones, reading blue-white and crisp rather than the yellow of a filament lamp. The dome is plain white and the beam spreads across 220 degrees, so light travels sideways and upwards as well as down.

Daylight is a working light. It suits a kitchen ceiling fitting, a garage or workshop pendant, a utility room, a home office or a craft table, anywhere you want to see colour and detail honestly rather than warmly. The pack prints a colour rendering index above 80, which is why fabric, paint and food look closer to their true shade under it than under older energy saving lamps. It is a less comfortable choice for a sitting room or bedroom, where a warm white lamp at 2700K or 3000K will feel easier late in the evening.

There is no dimming here: the specification records the bulb as non-dimmable, so wire it to an ordinary on/off switch and keep dimmer circuits for a lamp rated for them. The pack states a 10 year, 10,000 hour life and more than 10,000 on/off cycles, which makes it a sensible fit for a hall or stairwell light that gets flicked constantly. How do I know my light fitting takes a B22 bulb?

Look at the cap on the bulb you are replacing. A B22 has a smooth metal base with two small pins on the sides, and it pushes in and twists a quarter turn rather than screwing.

Is 806 lumens really the same as my old 60W bulb?

Yes in terms of output. The pack rates this 8.8W lamp as the equal of a 60W conventional bulb, and 806 lumens is the figure the old 60W filament bulb produced.

Can I put this on a dimmer switch?

No. The specification records it as non-dimmable, so it belongs on a standard on/off switch. Fitted to a dimmer it may flicker, buzz or fail early, and the dimmer itself can be damaged.

What does 6,500K daylight actually look like?

It is a crisp blue-white, the coolest white commonly sold. It reads as bright and alert, good for tasks and detail, and noticeably cooler than a 2700K warm white bulb.

Will it cope with a light that is switched on and off all day?

The pack states more than 10,000 switching cycles, so a hall, landing or stairwell fitting that gets flicked many times a day is well within what it is built for.
