B22 (BC) LED Candle Bulb 4.9W 470lm - Warm White 3000K, 6 Pack

This is a candle bulb, the tapered lamp shape made for fittings where the bulb itself is on show. It takes a B22 bayonet cap, the push-and-twist fitting most British homes have, usually written as BC. The LED draws 4.9W and gives 470 lumens at 3,000 Kelvin, a warm white with slightly more brightness in it than a 2,700K bulb. The pack rates it as the equal of a 40W conventional candle bulb. One order brings six lamps, sold as five plus one.

Candle lamps belong in the fittings you look at: multi-arm ceiling lights over a dining table, wall lights either side of a chimney breast, small landing pendants and shaded table lamps with a bayonet lampholder. At 470 lumens each, three or five of them together light a sitting room comfortably without any one lamp being harsh to look at. The 3,000 Kelvin tone sits between the yellow of an old incandescent and the neutral white of 4,000K, which suits rooms with warm paint, wood or brass. If you are unsure of the cap, a B22 has two pins on a smooth metal base; a screw thread means you need an E27 or E14 instead.

The pack prints a 240 degree beam angle, so the light spreads sideways and down rather than forming a narrow cone, and a colour rendering index above 80, which keeps fabrics and skin tones looking natural. It also prints a rated life of 10 years or 10,000 hours and more than 10,000 switching cycles, which matters on a hall or stairwell light that is flicked on and off many times a day. The energy class printed on the pack is F, and the pack states the lamps are mercury free. Minimum order is one pack of six, sold in multiples of one. Will these fit my existing light fitting?

They fit a B22 bayonet lampholder, the type with two small pins on a smooth metal base that you push in and turn a quarter turn. They will not fit a screw-in E27 or E14 holder.

How bright is 4.9W against the bulb I am taking out?

Each lamp gives 470 lumens, and the pack rates that as the equal of a 40W conventional candle bulb. Lumens are the figure to compare on, not watts, now that LEDs use so little power.

Can I put these on a dimmer switch?

The manufacturer does not state whether these lamps can be dimmed and no dimming information is printed on the pack, so we would not put them on a dimmer circuit without checking first.

What does warm white 3,000K actually look like?

It is a soft white with a little warmth in it, close to a traditional filament bulb but slightly cleaner. It flatters warm paint, wood and brass, and it is easier on the eye than 4,000K in a sitting room.

Is an IP rating given for these bulbs?

No IP rating is stated by the manufacturer, so treat them as ordinary indoor lamps and use them in dry, indoor fittings only.

How many bulbs do I receive?

Six lamps in one pack, made up of five plus one extra. That is enough for a five-arm ceiling fitting with a spare, or for a pair of three-light wall fittings.
