Description

The Eveready 4-65W fluorescent starter is a two-pin glow-switch component designed to ignite fluorescent tubes rated between 4W and 65W on 220-240V circuits. Each starter contains a bimetallic strip inside a small glass capsule filled with inert gas, which closes to preheat the tube electrodes and then opens to create the voltage spike needed for the gas to ionise and sustain the arc.

Supplied in a pack of 25, these starters suit commercial and industrial applications where multiple fluorescent fittings need maintenance stock on hand. Offices, schools, workshops and retail premises with banks of fluorescent tubes often replace starters as a diagnostic step when a tube fails to light or flickers on starting. The 9,000-cycle life rating and 10,000 switching-operation tolerance mean each starter handles several years of typical daily use before degradation.

The integrated anti-disturbance capacitor suppresses radio-frequency interference during the starting pulse, reducing the electromagnetic noise that can affect nearby equipment. Start time is under 4 seconds from switch-on to full arc strike, avoiding the prolonged flicker associated with failing starters. The starter fits standard fluorescent batten fittings, panels and ceiling grids using a quarter-turn bayonet mount.

Frequently Asked

What wattage tubes does this starter support?

The 4-65W rating covers standard fluorescent tubes from 4W compact models up to 65W T8 tubes. Most office and workshop installations using T8 tubes between 18W and 58W fall within this range. Tubes above 65W require a different starter type.

How do I know when a starter needs replacing?

Common symptoms include the tube flickering repeatedly without lighting, glowing only at the ends, or lighting after a long delay. If a new tube still won't light, replacing the starter is the next diagnostic step before checking the ballast or wiring.

Are these starters compatible with LED tubes?

No. LED tubes designed to retrofit fluorescent fittings typically bypass the starter and ballast entirely, using mains voltage directly. Installing a starter with an LED tube can damage the LED driver. Remove the starter when retrofitting to LED.

What is the anti-disturbance capacitor for?

The capacitor suppresses the radio-frequency interference generated during the starting pulse. This reduces electromagnetic noise that can affect AM radios, older telephones and sensitive electronic equipment in the same room.
