Description

The Eveready R39 is a 30W incandescent reflector bulb with an E14 (small Edison screw) base, rated at 180 lumens and 2700K warm white. This is a special-purpose bulb designed specifically for lava lamps and certain decorative light fixtures that require both the heat output and the reflector shape of a traditional incandescent bulb. The R39 designation refers to the 39mm reflector diameter.

Lava lamp operation depends on the steady heat output from an incandescent bulb to warm the wax and create the characteristic flow. LED or halogen equivalents do not generate the same thermal output and will not operate a lava lamp correctly. The reflector shape of this R39 bulb concentrates both light and heat upward into the base of the lamp globe. The E14 base fits the majority of UK and European lava lamp models from the 1990s onwards.

Beyond lava lamp use, the R39 reflector shape also suits small accent fixtures, display case downlights, and vanity mirror side lights where a compact reflector is needed. The 2700K colour temperature provides a warm incandescent glow rather than the cooler tones of halogen or daylight LEDs. At 30W the bulb draws modest power and generates moderate heat, making it compatible with enclosed fixtures rated for incandescent use. The non-dimmable design is standard for special-purpose incandescent bulbs.

Frequently Asked

Can I use an LED bulb instead for a lava lamp?

No. Lava lamps require the consistent heat output from an incandescent bulb to warm the wax and maintain flow. LED bulbs produce very little heat and will not operate a lava lamp. This 30W incandescent R39 is specifically designed for lava lamp use.

What does R39 mean?

R39 describes a reflector bulb with a 39mm diameter. The reflector shape concentrates light and heat in a directional beam, which is why it works for lava lamps and small accent fixtures.

What is the E14 base?

E14 is a small Edison screw base, 14mm in diameter. It is also called SES (Small Edison Screw) and is common in European and UK decorative lighting, lava lamps, and compact fixtures.

How long does the bulb last?

Incandescent bulbs typically last around 1,000 hours of use. For a lava lamp running 3-4 hours per day, expect approximately one year of lamp life before replacement is needed.
