Description
The English Bridle is a 620mm outdoor chain lantern housing three E14 candle bulbs behind curved seeded glass panels, suspended from a matt black chain and ceiling rose. The lantern body combines a black aluminium frame with clear seeded glass that shows bubble texture and optical distortion, giving candlelight a diffused, softened appearance characteristic of hand-blown heritage glasswork.
Designed for covered outdoor locations including entrance porches, terrace overhangs, pergolas and loggia ceilings, the IP44 rating protects against rain splashes from any direction but requires shelter from direct overhead rainfall. The 267mm diameter and 620mm body height suit ceiling heights from 2.4m upwards, with the 1524mm chain allowing the drop to be set between 680mm minimum and 2205mm maximum on installation. The lantern works well hung 1800-2000mm above ground level for porch entrances or 2000-2200mm for open terrace areas.
The black powder-coated aluminium frame shows decorative scroll detailing along the top frieze and turned finial details at the base, echoing carriage lantern and Victorian street lighting forms. The seeded glass panels curve to follow the lantern body, creating an oval cross-section rather than flat sides, which catches and refracts light from multiple angles when the bulbs are lit. The three E14 sockets accept candle bulbs up to 60W each (sold separately), with warm-white filament-effect LEDs producing the most period-appropriate effect through the textured glass.

Frequently Asked
What does IP44 mean and where can this lantern be installed?
IP44 provides protection against solid objects over 1mm and water splashes from any direction. The English Bridle can be installed on covered porches, under terrace roofs, beneath pergolas or loggia ceilings where it receives shelter from direct overhead rain. It is not suitable for fully exposed locations without overhead cover.
What bulbs does it take?
The lantern takes three E14 small Edison screw candle bulbs up to 60W each. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users choose warm-white LED candle bulbs between 4-6W and 2700K for a period appearance through the seeded glass.
Can the drop height be adjusted after installation?
The drop is adjustable on installation only, by shortening the 1524mm chain to the desired length between 680mm minimum and 2205mm maximum. Once the lantern is hung and wired, the chain length is fixed unless the fitting is taken down and re-installed.
Does the seeded glass affect light output?
Yes. The bubble texture and optical distortion in the seeded glass diffuse and soften the light compared to clear flat glass. This creates ambient illumination rather than bright task lighting, which suits decorative outdoor installations where atmosphere is valued over maximum brightness.
