Description

The English Bridle is a 470mm outdoor chain lantern with three E14 candle bulbs housed behind seeded glass panels, set within a black powder-coated metal frame shaped like a traditional coach lantern. The lantern body combines a turned top finial, decorative metalwork band beneath the hood, and curved glass panels that taper towards the base, giving the proportions of an 18th-century carriage light scaled for residential outdoor use.

Designed for covered porches, front door canopies, garden pergolas and pathway arbours, the lantern hangs on a 1524mm adjustable chain that can be shortened during installation to suit ceiling heights between 580mm and 2105mm total drop. The IP44 rating protects against solid objects above 1mm and water splashes from any direction, making it suitable for covered outdoor locations but not exposed positions subject to driving rain. The 216mm diameter fits porches and covered walkways without overwhelming narrow entryways.

The seeded glass has tiny bubbles trapped within it during manufacture, creating a textured surface that breaks up the direct view of the bulb filaments and softens the light output when lit. The black finish is a powder-coated metal that resists corrosion in outdoor environments. Each of the three bulb positions accepts up to 60W, giving flexibility to choose LED candle bulbs between 4-6W for ambient porch lighting or brighter outputs for path visibility. The lantern requires hard-wired connection to mains power — it is not a plug-in fitting.

The IP44 rating protects against splashing water but not sustained driving rain. The lantern is designed for covered outdoor positions such as under porch roofs, canopies, or pergolas where it has overhead protection. Fully exposed wall-mounted positions benefit from IP65-rated fittings instead.

What bulbs does it take?

Three E14 small Edison screw candle bulbs, up to 60W each. Bulbs are not included. Most users pair this with warm white LED candle bulbs between 4-6W and 2700K for a traditional flame-like appearance through the seeded glass.

How is the chain length adjusted?

The 1524mm chain can be shortened during installation by removing links to achieve the desired drop. The minimum drop of 580mm includes the lantern body height plus the canopy. The total maximum drop of 2105mm uses the full chain length.

Is the seeded glass replaceable if it breaks?
