Description

The English Bridle is a 2.4m outdoor lamp post with a three-light lantern head in a black powder-coated finish. The lantern sits on a tapered post with decorative mid-post rings and a square cast base, topped with a domed cap and finial. Clear seeded glass panels enclose three upward-facing E14 candle bulbs (sold separately), and the glass texture diffuses light while allowing rain to run off without pooling.

Designed for front gardens, driveways and pathway lighting where a traditional carriage-lamp aesthetic is needed, the 2.4m height sits above typical fencing and planting to cast light across a 4-6m radius. The IP44 rating protects the internal wiring and bulb holders from rain and spray, making the fitting suitable for UK weather year-round. Installation requires a concrete foundation or a paved base with an earth strap, and mains-voltage wiring run underground in conduit to meet Building Regulations Part P.

The black finish is baked powder-coat over die-cast aluminium, chosen to resist corrosion in coastal and urban environments. The post is hollow to conceal the cable run, and the lantern head is hinged at the base to allow access for bulb changes without dismantling the entire fitting. Each E14 socket accepts bulbs up to 60W, but most users fit 4-6W LED candle bulbs to achieve the same light output as 40W incandescent without the heat build-up inside the glass enclosure.

What bulbs does it take?

The lantern takes three E14 (small Edison screw) candle bulbs, each rated up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users fit warm-white LED candle bulbs between 4-6W and 2700K to replicate the look of incandescent light without the heat.

Can it be installed on an existing paved driveway?

Yes, provided the paving can support the weight and a foundation is prepared beneath. The post requires a concrete footing or a steel ground anchor set into the paving substrate, with mains cable run in conduit beneath the surface. Installation must comply with Building Regulations Part P for outdoor electrical work.

Is the lantern head removable for bulb changes?

Yes. The lantern head is hinged at the base and secured with a thumbscrew or latch, allowing it to swing open for bulb access without removing the entire fitting from the post.
