This is a rechargeable LED head torch that puts 400 lumens on the strap, which keeps both hands free for the job in front of you. The retail pack prints seven modes, a 4h runtime, an 80m beam and IPX4 water protection. Power comes from a lithium polymer battery held inside the lamp body, and a charging cable is supplied, so there are no cells to buy and none to fit in the dark. One pack contains one light, one battery and one cable.

The seven modes matter more than the headline figure once you are actually using it. Full output with an 80m throw is what you want for walking an unlit lane or scanning the far side of a field; the lower and coloured settings shown on the pack are for close work, where 400 lumens simply bounces back off the page, the map or the engine bay and spoils your night vision. That makes it a sensible buy for camping, fishing, running and cycling after dark, for loft and under bonnet jobs, for dog walks on paths with no street lighting, and for keeping in a drawer against the next power cut.

Charging is the only upkeep this one asks for. Run it down, plug in the supplied cable and fill it back up; a lithium polymer battery holds its charge fairly well between uses, which is what makes a rechargeable lamp worth leaving in a car boot or a rucksack. The pack prints IPX4, so splashing water from any direction is covered and rain or a wet hedge is no problem.
