D is the largest of the cylindrical cells in everyday use, and these are the alkaline version from the Energizer Max range, supplied two to a blister card. Alkaline chemistry gives a nominal 1.5 volts per cell, which is what almost every device designed for a D cell expects, so these drop straight into a holder marked LR20 or D without any adapter or spacer. The cells carry the black and silver Max livery, with a raised positive button at one end and a flat base at the other, in the standard size a D compartment is moulded for.

D cells earn their keep in things that either draw a lot of current or need to run for a long time without attention. Big rubber torches and camping lanterns are the obvious ones, along with portable radios, wall mounted door chimes, garage and shed lights, bin sensors, automatic pet feeders and the larger children's ride on toys and musical instruments. If you have opened a battery compartment and found a cell noticeably fatter and taller than an AA, this is the size you are after, and two cells cover most single and twin cell holders.

The retail pack states a 10 year shelf life, so a spare card put in a drawer now should still be usable when the torch finally needs it. Each listing is one card of two cells, and the minimum order is 12 cards, sold in multiples of 12, which works out at 24 cells in total. How many batteries do I actually receive?

One card holds two D cells. The minimum order is 12 cards sold in multiples of 12, so a single minimum order brings you 24 cells.

Can these be recharged?

No. These are alkaline primary cells, designed to be used once and then recycled. Attempting to charge a primary alkaline cell is unsafe and should not be tried.

What voltage will two of them give me?

Each alkaline cell is 1.5V nominal. A holder that puts two in series therefore sees 3V, and a four cell holder sees 6V.

Is it worth replacing all the cells in a device at once?

Generally yes. Mixing part used cells with fresh ones in the same holder means the weaker cell sets the pace, so a full set of the same size and chemistry works best.

How long can I keep a spare card before using it?

The pack states a 10 year shelf life, so a card bought for the stores cupboard should still be ready to go years after purchase.
